Weekendowe seminarium z Benedictem Seymourem

(if you are looking for English version, please scroll down)

Serdecznie zapraszamy do Bunkra Sztuki w przyszły weekend! 23 i 24 maja gościć będziemy Benedicta Seymoura – artystę i wykładowcę na Wydziale Sztuk Pięknych w Goldsmith, University of London.

Obecnie wykłada na Wydziale Sztuk Pięknych, Goldsmiths, University of London.

Ewy Majewskiej i Jana Sowy). Z inicjatywy Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego kółko gościło ponadto debatę z udziałem Roberta Esposita i Tadeusza Sławka. Wygłoszono 31 referatów, gościnie wystąpił (poprzez Skype’a) dr Krzysztof Nawratek*.

Détournement and art in the age of their digital-social (non-)reproduction. A movie screening and a seminar with Benedict Seymour

We would like to invite you to an open two-day seminar with Benedict Seymour that will take place between 23th and 24th May (next weekend) in Bunkier Sztuki gallery in Kraków. We will read and discuss key texts on détournement, non-reproduction, and art. We will watch and critique some of the classic instances of détournement in film and then a few recent experiments in repeating détournement critically. The key-point of the Saturday meeting will be a screening of Benedict Seymour's „La Ré” - a non-reproduction of Chris Marker’s La Jetée (1963) which attempts to present a radical remapping of politics and culture post-2008 by recycling and transforming a seminal work of science fiction. The film is composed entirely of animated gifs and memes. The starting point of the second meeting will be Debord's 'A User’s Guide to Détournment' and Frederic Jameson's 'Culture and Finance Capital'.

This seminar will be exploting the genealogy and potential of the technique of détournement for critical art, specifically video. According to its formulators, détournement is a practice whereby fragments of the degraded and reified cultural material thrown at us by capitalism are ripped out of their context and purpose as propaganda for a world of ersatz life and capital accumulation and liberated to perform ludic subversive and critical burlesques of everything existing. It is a cultural critique of an increasingly acculturated commodity form and a way of turning the language of capital against itself. It takes modernist techniques of bricolage and radicalises them in line with revolutionary, and specifically consumer-society-focused, negativity and desires.

In an era in which détournement’s key moves and gestures have become automated, where algorithms do what artists should be doing, and artists are reduced to the appendices of algorithms and fictitious capital, the commodity’s domination of social existence in its entirety has reached hyperbolic proportions. In addition, in a thousand ways, the techniques of ripping and breaking, fragmenting and recombining have become the formula for contemporary capitalist self-reproduction. As the state and capital destroy social reproduction, what is to distinguish cultural and artistic negation from the restructuring and constriction of consumption and reproduction dictated by an austerity oriented capitalism? If dialectics can break bricks, what can it do when the bricks arrive pre-broken and the collapsing new buildings don't even last as long as the highrise blocs of alienation critiqued by Debord and the Situationist International?

Here's the plan:
23th May (Saturday)
6-8.30 pm: movie screening: „La Ré”, Benedict Seymour + lecture/discussion

24th May(Sunday)
11 am - 3.15 pm – seminar: movie + discussion on theoretical texts:
  1. Guy Debord, „A User’s Guide to Détournement” www.bopsecrets.org/SI/detourn.htm
  2. Fredric Jameson, „Culture and Finance Capital”, in: „The Cultural Turn: Selected Writings on the Postmodern 1983–1998”, Verso 1998.

Additional texts:
  1. The screenplay and notes to Debord’s In girum imus nocte et consumimir igni.http://www.bopsecrets.org/SI/debord.films/ingirum.htm
  2. DOIN’ IT TO DEATH: Stewart Home Interviewed by Rodrigo Nunes [section on detournement and bricolage]http://www.stewarthomesociety.org/interviews/nunes.htm
  3. Texts by Benedict Seymour inc: ‘Notes on non-reproduction and art’ (2014), Creativity’s Rainbow’ (2009)
If you would like to participate in the seminar on Sunday, please send an email to: pokapitalizmie@gmail.com. We will send you all texts in pdf format if needed.

Benedict Seymour is a writer, musician and artist. His activity includes theoretical and artistic forms of research, from literary fiction to soundtracks to filmic meditations on Marxian philosophy. He is currently completing an 80 minute ‘re-make’ of Chris Marker’s La jetée that uses animated gifs snipped out of cinematic derivatives of that film in an attempt to ‘repeat’ Marker’s film and so explore the ambivalence of (artistic and social) reproduction in contemporary culture.
Seymour’s recent writing has pursued a parallel exploration of the notion of contemporary capitalist aesthetics as a new kind of shock (doctrine), in which the trauma of ‘primitive accumulation’ is at once buffered and protracted, suppressed and raised to a higher power. This research emerged out of Seymour’s earlier exploration in writing and film of the shock and looting involved in urban regeneration and gentrification with The London Particular . He explored the links between financialisation and cultural-social contraction in a number of articles and essays for Mute magazine (of which he was Deputy Editor 2003-08), including 'Fear Death by Water: The Regeneration Siege in Central Hackney’  and 'Drowning by Numbers: The Non-Reproduction of New Orleans' (2006). He has made music with Antifamily and Petit Mal and created soundtracks for Melanie Gilligan's films Crisis in the Credit System, Popular Unrest and The Common Sense.
Recent film works include ‘La Re’ (2015), ‘Can Dialectics Break Gravity?’ (2014) with Matthew Noel Tod and ‘Bang!’ (2012), for which he wrote the script. His next project is a 'film-opera' based on Mann’s Doctor Faustus, positing the birth of financialisation out of musical minimalism, tracing an arc from 1962-1971-to the present ‘Big Society’ and a geopolitics of ‘lessness’.
